Winner of the 56th NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work - Youth/Teens
In February 2025, Brushed Between Cultures won an 56th NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work – Youth/Teens. It was an honor beyond Samarra’s wildest dreams. As an indie author, receiving such a prestigious award is a powerful reminder of the importance of faith and the courage to dream beyond your past and present circumstances.
Receiving the NAACP Image Awards trophy was such a surreal moment that I had to hold on as tightly as possible. My heart was filled with so much joy and gratitude to be among other winners and nominees in a room that I never fathomed being in. Despite the celebrity status of the attendees, the room was filled with love and acceptance. This is a moment that will forever be etched in my mind. To think, I almost allowed fear to rob me of such a memorable experience.
